The Neural Web: How I Unearthed an RCE That Opened Pandora’s Box 🌐🔧

In the exhilarating, caffeine-driven world of bug hunting, some discoveries make you go, “Wow, I really just broke the matrix,” and this one… oh, this one was the holy grail. A blend of RCE (Remote Code Execution), information disclosure, repository compromise, and a touch of chaos that would make even the most hardened sysadmins weep. Buckle up — this story’s a wild ride! 🌌🍼

The Target: AI Behemoth on Cloud 9 🤖

As I scoped out the web application of a GenAI and OpenAI-based service, I noticed something odd about their API documentation — too much transparency. It’s like they handed me a treasure map with a big red “X” marked, daring me to dig deeper.

Their setup was a cocktail of microservices, machine learning models, and serverless functions, all orchestrated like a digital symphony on a popular cloud platform. It screamed modern security nightmare, and my hacker instincts tingled.

The Entry Point: The Over-Helpful API 🕵️‍♂️

It all began with an innocuous endpoint:

The endpoint was the gateway to their fine-tuned language model, but it had a dirty little secret. It accepted parameters like temperature and model without much validation. Curiosity got the better of me, and I wondered, “What happens if I send something unconventional?”

Escalation: The Magic of Prompt Injection 🔮

I crafted a malicious payload that pushed the boundaries of “prompt engineering”:

Oh, the audacity! Their backend script was naively executing user-supplied commands in a sanitized container. But wait, there’s more.

The Jackpot: The Info Disclosure 🎮

Armed with the secrets.env file contents, I unearthed their database credentials, S3 bucket keys, and… wait for it… the Holy Grail: an API key for their internal repository management system. Someone in their dev team must’ve believed hardcoding was still cool.

Using these credentials, I gained read access to their private repositories. Within seconds, I’d stumbled across their infrastructure-as-code scripts, exposing every nook and cranny of their cloud architecture. One YAML misconfiguration later, I was in.

Game Over: Repository Compromise & Beyond 🔒

With elevated access, I could:

  1. Inject malicious code into their AI training pipelines.
  2. Exfiltrate training data (hello, juicy proprietary datasets).
  3. Spin up costly cloud resources, effectively setting their billing meter on fire.

The pièce de résistance? I triggered an RCE via their CI/CD pipeline:

Lessons Learned (The Hard Way) 🙄

This treasure trove of vulnerabilities highlighted critical mistakes:

  2. Leaky environment files: Secrets don’t belong in code or configuration files.
  3. Insufficient API scope: Using overly permissive API keys is a cardinal sin.
  4. CI/CD misconfigurations: If your pipeline can be hijacked, so can your entire system.

The Aftermath: My Reward 🏆

After responsibly disclosing this to the company, I was greeted with the highest bounty I’ve ever received (let’s just say it covered more than a few sleepless nights). They also patched their API, overhauled their IAM policies, and upgraded their CI/CD pipeline security.

Hunting vulnerabilities in AI systems is like playing chess with a grandmaster: you need to anticipate moves, outsmart defenses, and exploit weaknesses. This journey reinforced my belief that complex systems, no matter how advanced, are never infallible.
